Hiring a contractor for your next home project requires research, analysis, and diligence on the part of the homeowner. The following items should be considered when hiring a contractor:

- Get at least three written estimates from contractors. Expect to see variances in quoted prices and ask for a breakdown of the costs.
- Get references from the contractor. Talking with past clients will reveal positive (and negative) experiences with the contractor. Visit the work done for past clients to personally understand a contractor's craftsmanship.
- Get everything in writing. Document what work is to be done, when it will be completed, and how changes will be facilitated.
- Ensure proper licensing and insurance.
- Minimize your down payment. Contractors typically require a down payment because they incur a cost to purchase materials. Keeping that in mind, don't overpay your down payment.
- Ensure that the contractor will clean up daily. When the contractor has finished for the day, make sure they clean up after their work.
- Final payment upon satisfaction. Pay the final amount due once you are satisfied with the work completed.
